Starting next week I will have five kids over the age of eight. Part of me is excited about this. But, a HUGE part of me is dreading it! My own two seem to act worse then the dck. I told DH I am ready to build on to the house and have another room for the older kids to hang out in especially during nap time. I'm thinking they are going to have craft time during nap time. Maybe some computer time. Thankfully they are all easy kids and its only for three weeks!happyface

I have a few myself this summer. Volume control is an issue!
What seems to work with my crew, is we do reading for an hour after lunch (beginning of naps), followed by electronic time. No reading quietly = no electronics. We're at week 6 and it's still working. If they want to read to each other, cool, read to themselves, cool, etc. I'll sit with each younger child (1st graders) and help them read. It's working out well. I was reluctant to allow electronics, but after thinking about it, I thought why not. They all come in to my house with them, so why should I be the bad guy? I have certain games that are not allowed.
Other things that have been popular so far are making your own lemonade (give lemons, water and sugar and they come up with their own concoctions), salt dough decor (they pressed beads, seashells, stones, etc into salt dough, poked a hole in it and strung it with twine once dried), random craft supplies and plenty of tape and glue, and food creations with marzipan. The marzipan kept them busy for over an hour!
Good luck. It'll be over before you know it and you'll appreciate your quieter bunch!- Flag

For my older SA crowd we do a half hour of reading and then they journal. They then have the choice (if weather permits) to play outside, draw inside or watch a movie. By the time all that is done I can let the inside noise level go up a bit as nap is ending.
I also allow electronics.
My kids have chosen outside the majority of the summer- Flag

Day 3 and it has been great! They all are doing well and seem to leave happy. Well, I have one that thinks rules don't apply to her but, that is nothing new. I have enjoyed having the older kids more then I thought I would. Today they are playing with kindles while the littles nap.- Flag

Hot-glue guns plus recycled "junk." You'll have to tear them away after hours of work. Today, my "big kids" are making boats (plastic things, corks, etc.) and testing them in the bathtub. They've been at it for 3 1/2 hours.- Flag
