DCM Yelled At DCB

I knew it was coming...dcm gets here at pick up and after sending dcb in a new white shirt and new white shoes, she YELLS at him asking him WHY he wore those things to daycare.

He just turned 4 in February!!! Isn't it mom's job to make sure the kids wear play clothes to daycare, as I've told them they need to do because they WILL get dirty...and he DID get dirty.

I don't normally get involved with parenting but had a parent yelled at their child about what they were wearing and they did it in my daycare and I had other DC kids present I would have said something. Something like ...

"You know Sally, it really isn't little Johnny's fault. Kids at his age don't have the capacity yet to think into the future about consequences like what they wear and how they should keep clean. You know I have found that picking out my kids clothes with them over the weekend for the next five days helps out a lot. They get a choice of what they want to wear and I get input as to whether it's appropriate or not which saves me a headache. You never know, maybe you can give it a try? And also can I just please ask you not to scold him like that while you are around other daycare kids. Little ears may go home and talk about it and I'm afraid that other parents might get the impression that I allow parents yelling at their children in front of the others. I know you don't mean it that way but you know how things can be misconstrued and little ones do like to tell stories"

I guess I would just feel uncomfortable with having another parent yell or "freak out" around the other kids. I had a mom do something similar once about arriving in time to participate in meals but it was directed towards me instead of the child. Well wouldn't you know that I got concerned phone calls from other parents because their child told them that another mom came to daycare and yelled at me. They were all defensive in my defense but it was an embarrassing situation to be placed in to begin with and then I had to reassure the other parents that everything was just fine. Of course the other parents were told by their children that "so-and-so's mommy" yelled at me so they knew who it was and she got dirty looks and the cold shoulder for a while so it was all out not the greatest thing to ever happen ::.

Poor guy! He probably just wanted to look spiffy!

That's a shame. If you allow your child to pick their clothing, then 1. make sure only "appropriate" clothing is within their reach and 2. don't complain.
