DCB Who Was NOT Sick

Last week I had a dcb who had the worst runny nose ever in the history of runny noses...was running down his arm and everything he touched. I told mom I thought it was probably just allergies and that she needed to give him something to dry him up before he came the next day.

Well, she brought him and said he'd been fine and that she didn't have the money to buy him anything so I sent him home. When dcb's sister arrived after school, she told me dcb had thrown up the night before. He's also had a cough.

So when dcm arrived to pick up sib, she told me he never has any problems except when he's at my house...so I asked her about him vomiting the night before, she admitted it but brushed it off.

So he comes in today and he's very hoarse. Then a little while ago his nose started bleeding. I guess long story short, do I call mom for the bloody nose?

I'm thinking at this point he may have a sinus infection, but I KNOW mom will just brush it off as something that ONLY happens at my house.

Since this is on-going with no resolution, why not require a doctor's note before the child can be readmitted to care?

As for a doctor's note for diagnosis ONLY. Other wise, parents have doctors write notes saying child can return to care.

Ask specifically for doctor to address the things you have seen/documented.

That way mom can't blow it off. '

I fill in a form stating my observations and then ask the parent to have the doctor fill in the second portion of the form. That way the parent can't omit details of the child's illness.

Bloody noses in that age group could be anything.... Nose sprays...dry sinuses.... Nose picking.... Lots of things...

But I'm like BC.. This has been an ongoing issue with that family.

I'd do what BC said... Type up a paper with all of the symptoms YOU have seen, leave some space for the doctor... And send mom to the doc with the form.

Has the mom taken the child to the doctor lately??

He just vomited all over...when it first started coming out, it was alllllL CLEAR mucous...exactly like all the snot he had going all over the place last Thursday. Then he vomited up all his food, so I assume he began by vomiting all the mucous that was going down his throat and then because of the gag reflex, next came his lunch.

I'm so tired of dealing with this. He's been sick in one way or another non-stop since he started here. He vomited for 2 weeks...yet his mom said he only does that here. Ok, the first week he was out the entire week and he was STILL vomiting every day.

I'm tired of the excuses. I'm tired of him being sick all the time. I'm tired of having to call mom and her tell me he's fine once he leaves here.

If I wouldn't be down in my numbers by terming him, I'd do it in a heartbeat. He has a sib though and I'd be losing her as well. This same mom signed up for state subsidy in February, and because she won't get all the stuff in that she needs, she STILL isn't approved for it.

She complains because I make her pay up front (which isn't much...only 20$ for the sa kid) but what's she going to do when school is out in 3 weeks in sa kids' fees go up 70.00???

I'm interviewing and when I fill two more full time spots, they will be gone. I just can't take this sickness any more....

Keep him out for 48 hours EVERY time he vomits or presents symptoms of illness in your care. I got that rule from BlackCat.

The following is my CURRENT rules about illness in my parent handbook. I find that it is constantly changing.

Illness, Medication, and Vaccination Policy
__Business name__ does not dispense medication with the exception of asthma inhalers, nebulizer treatments, or an EpiPen as needed. Staff members are First Aid and CPR certified.

Children may not attend school if they presently have or have had any of the following symptoms within the past 24 hours:
• Temperature of 100 or above (taken by armpit)
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Discharge from the eyes
• Mouth sores undiagnosed by a Doctor
• Green discharge from the nose (or a constant running nose)
• Other symptoms or behavior indicative of oncoming illness
• Constant sneezing, constant coughing, acting lethargic, or wheezing that may or may not be caused by an illness

If any child develops any of the above symptoms while in our care, we will isolate
him/her and contact the parents for immediate pick up. It is of great importance that
a parent or emergency contact person remains reachable and responds quickly. A parent, guardian, or emergency contact has 45 minutes to pick up the sick child from Preschool before a late fee is assessed.

If a sick child is still present 45 minutes after contact was made informing the parent of illness (regardless if there was a response) then the $1.00/minute late fee will apply. The late fee invoice will be sent via ChildCarePay.com and will need to be paid prior to arrival the following day in order for the child to be accepted into care.

It is __busniess name__'s policy that your child be symptom free and/or on antibiotics for at least 24 hours before returning to school in order to effectively protect the other children and staff members. If a child returns to school and is not symptom free and/or on antibiotics for at least 24 hours, then the child will be sent home and will be unable to attend school for at least 48 hours. Children on any type of fever or pain medication (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc.) are clearly too sick to attend Preschool and will not be admitted until they are medication free for 24 hours. Fever and pain relievers mask the symptoms of an illness and do not cure it. Violation of this policy is grounds for immediate termination without notice.
After 5 days of symptoms with no improvement, the student will be excluded from care until they have been seen by a Doctor and have a Doctor's note explaining what the child has and what the treatment plan is. Administration will be the final deciding factor concerning re-admittance into Preschool.
If your child has been exposed or contracted any contagious diseases or infections such as (but not limited to) chicken pox, whooping cough, or strep throat, please keep your child at home and contact __business name__ to report the condition.
Please request an antibiotic that is given twice daily from your child’s doctor, as ___business name___ will not dispense medication.
__business name___ reserves the right to deny services to a child who is ill.
If your child has been vaccinated, they must remain home for a minimum of 24 hours.
