I could have titled this many things......such as "Tried to do a good deed and hoped for good karma, instead opposite happened"......or "Gave a cop a break, and he screwed us!"......either way I'm not happy
So last year this local cop stops by and says he has a boy in K and a daughter in preschool that needs somewhere to go. He's a single dad with no help from mom (if she comes by we're supposed to call the cops
), and gets CCDF (the government funding, but only half of what we charge. We decide that maybe we'll get some good karma our way and we decide to take his children.
At the beginning things were okay. He wasn't keeping up with his co-pay but it was so little we figured we'd get it soon. Then he started asking us to stay 1/2 an hour to an hour after closing 1-2 times a week. Since I live here and my girls sometimes want extra cash I said sure. About half the time he paid the $10 fee. We still weren't getting his co-pay. Then he kept getting farther and farther behind. I was giving him an updated bill monthly but nothing was being done about it. Then in December he said he can pay the full amount when he gets his tax money end of January. Once again we decide to be nice and since he's a cop and single dad we'd help him out. Next thing we know it's mid-February and still no money. No'w he's saying that he was supposed to get $10,000 back on taxes but college loans took $8,000 so he doesn't have the money. I keep telling him even a little bit will help, but nothing. Finally end of March he says he's pulling his kids out because he keeps digging himself deeper and deeper in debt with us, but that he'll start paying $50 every two weeks. He owes us almost $2,000!!!!!
I know I should have stopped things sooner, but felt sympathy for the guy. But he's working 2-3 jobs and never home to see his kids (which is why I don't see why he doesn't have money), and they never have any new clothes or toys or anything. Until February they were living in a 1 bedroom apartment and they slept on the couch/floor!
It feels so wrong taking a cop to small claims court, but it looks like that's what we're gonna have to do
