I WAS Feeling Guilty About Taking Time Off!! NOT Anymore!!!

I've been thinking about taking off the Thursday and Friday before Memorial Day. I told DCM I was going to be taking those two days off.

She said she was going to ask his previous provider if she could take care of him those two days.

(DCB was previously at my provider friend across the street. She had to let him go due to downsizing. Everything was smooth and things went fine. )

I talked to previous provider and she said- "DCM told me she couldn't miss any time from work, I can keep DCB for those two days."

Fast forward- DCM brought DCB to DC on Thursday and Friday last week and she took time off from work. She also worked only a few hours today....

I never feel poorly about taking time off, not that it happens very often anyways.

I frequently have parents going into work late because they overslept, parents who skip work to run errands/do yard work/clean up the house for their child's birthday party the next day/etc., and parents who bring their children here when they decide to take a day off just because. If they can do all of that, I can take pre-scheduled holidays off with no guilt. ::

It's funny though that people think we won't find out about what they tell other people. But maybe she was already planning on taking the first 2 days off and now can't take another 2 days off?

Oh and also, depending on what your DCM does and where she works, there are many places that won't pay you the holiday pay for the holiday if you take the day before or after the holiday off. At least that's the way it used to be where I last worked (before daycare). Maybe she used personal/sick time for the first 2 days but can't use it for the day near the holiday or she wouldn't be getting paid her holiday hours???

I had a parent switch days last week because on her scheduled day she was going to call in sick to work, to have a yard sale. I told her maybe I should try that. She said I better not even think about it, laughed and walked out the door. I was at a loss for words. I had to pick my jaw up off the ground and get back to work. Since I don't have a life outside of caring for her child.............. Where's the icon for kiss my grits?

I don't think one has anything to do with the other. Your policies are your policies. If you go by your handbook and contract when taking time off, then you shouldn't feel guilty. It's business. If a parent ever complained, I wouldn't even get into all of that. It's irrelevant. I'd just say, see my handbook on p.10 and the contract you signed. Done.

I have no problem taking a day off here or there. I have done daycare for over 30 years. We work long hours, I work a 10 hour day, have to chase after somebody's child all day, change messy diaper's,feed them, nap them, play with them, give them the care and attention they should have and teach them. We do more then some parents do working at their job! Now, don't you think you deserve a day off once in awhile!

Parents have no problem taking their time off and even then we have their kids. What makes me upset is when the parent is sick and brings their child to daycare so they can get some sleep,telling me that they can't get rest with having to have their child to watch that day. I don't know how many times I have felt a little under the weather and have had their kids even when they stayed home because they didn't feel good.

Don't feel guilty about taking a day off here or there, we DO deserve it. I do not charge parents when I do take a day off as in my guidelines I tell the parents that they are responsible to find alternative care for when I take a day off and they have to pay for someone else to watch their child that day, so it is not fair to charge them if I take the day off.
