Kids can be so rude at times

I care for a 3 year old dcb and he's the oldest one here, so all the dcks love to play with him. This morning as we were getting ready to go outside one of the younger dcb's was telling him "hi". This 3 year old told him to "leave me alone, I don't like you anymore." That just about broke my heart I tried talking to him and telling him that what he said wasn't nice and it is very hurtful to other people feelings, I also made him apologize to the lil boy.

    How would you'll handle this?

    I have his twin!
In all seriousness this is a stage they all seem to go through and we work through it. Typically I will say to the child "that isn't nice, you don't have to play with anyone, but you must use kind words" And I will give short examples. I do have a "cozy corner" which is out of sight of the play area (but still in my sight) for kids who just need a moment away from the crowd. Being able to get "away" seems to help.
