Mine were my husbands and then my kids and then my daycare kids. It's a huge set about 50 years old and still going strong! No idea where they came from!
I also have window blocks. The translucent windows, the sand windows, and the water windows. After 1 year of use, 2 have somewhat fallen apart. They have little wooden pegs holding them together in each corner and I have now glued the 2 that fell apart. :: I think I bought them from Discount School Supply.
I also have the Melissa & Doug set and I think they are great. They're easy to clean and very sturdy. The only thing that I would recommend if you buy a 60 piece set is that you buy two or more sets depending on how many kids you have. If you have 6-8 kids then 2 sets should be enough for them all to play together (3 if you have the $$) and if you have 8-14 kids then I'd double that. The kids will need ALOT of blocks to really be able to get creative (and they do get creative). Blocks are the one toy that I NEVER rotate out, I always have them out and the kids never get tired of playing with them.
I have lakeshore ones and they have been here for about 13 years and are still in great shape. I have some Melissa and Doug ones but they are smaller and lighter. I had one splinter and they are chipped fairly quickly. We generally play with those at the table. Now I have the wooden farm and town and they are heavier. They have chipped some but have stayed nicer longer.
may sure you get maple and you look to make sure you are not getting the table top set. You want unit blocks look for the best price including the shipping. I ordered so me to fill in my set from Amazon GREAT sale but I messed up and shipping cost me an arm and a leg.
