I have also had fourth graders that couldn't tie shoes. Always had a pair of velcros on.

Can someone tell me why their PARENTS can't teach this skill? I remember one on one time with my mother learning to tie my shoes. I did it with my kids too. I would not have expected someone else to do it. It can...and should be..... done AT HOME.- Flag

Just like when you teach kids to write their names...first letter uppercase and the rest lowercase..... Then the parent messes them up with teaching all uppercase.
"Little Johnny, did mamma help you again?" LOL- Flag

This is actually a requirement here for kindergarten-either you know how to tie shoes or you wear velcro. The teachers WILL NOT tie the shoes, zip up coats, button pants, help wipe noses, soap up hands, things like that. If you can't do it then your not ready for the big league-Each day is a fresh start

I think it's a parental responsibility...so kudos to you! Hope I didn't offend you?!- Flag

I used to teach kindergarten and only about half could tie their shoes. Some that couldn't just hadn't been taught, but some just were not ready as their fine motor skills just weren't there yet. Sometimes it's not a comprehension thing, but a motor skills thing.- Flag

For what it's worth- I do not recommend "Tie Buddies". I got them for my son (5yo) and they seem to make the process a lot more difficult. They are meant to make the loop process easier by holding the "point" of the loop and color coding the two laces, but they just end up getting in the way when making the initial cross over and knot. They also make untying the shoes more difficult as they get caught when you pull the laces. The concept seems okay until you actually try to use them. I also had a VERY difficult time getting them onto the laces in the first place. The hole in them in very small and I doubt that you would be able to fit the aglet of a sneaker, or the laces themselves, through them. My son wears dress shoes which have much narrower laces and I barely got them to fit. (Actually ruined the aglets with pliers trying to force them through.)
Complete waste of money.- Flag

Though there are some kids that just don't understand certain concepts until they get to the level of concrete operational thinking (ages 7-11). This is also around the age that kids start to understand to concept of conservation in terms of volume and mass- most kids under the age of 6 or 7 dont understand that two different sized items can hold the same amount of liquid even if it doesn't look equal (even if you pour all of the liquid from one container to the other infront of them).- Flag
