    Changing Vacation Time

    Hi all!

I've had my home daycare open for 5 years and after getting burned out the first two years without any time off I implemented a 2 week vacation for myself, one week at Christmas and one in the summer. I always give plenty of notice and reminders when the time off is coming up.

So like I said, been doing this 5 years from my home (17 in child care total) and my family and I are in a place where some changes are coming up. My oldest graduated last year, my middle will graduate in 3 years and we are home schooling our youngest so we will no longer be beholden to a school schedule.

Okay, I got off topic a bit! I want to start taking two weeks off in the summer now. I know which two weeks that we would close, should I give my parents notice now in case they want to find other care? I have 3 families that will likely not care much and one that may leave. And even I they don't they won't be happy about the change.

Is it too early to give them a heads up? Do you guys think its unreasonable to close for 2 weeks in the summer and one at Christmas? These are not paid. I don't charge for the weeks I take off. Should I make new contracts and hand them out? I've been wanting to change my contract a bit and to include that we renew each year to give me room to change if I want to but I didn't at the beginning of the year, is it unfair to do it now?

    Thanks for the input!

It's only 1/2 way through January, I think it's still the beginning of the year and the perfect time to make changes to contracts.

I think if you are already taking 2 weeks they must have back up care available and since you don't charge them for your vacation I don't see a huge problem with one more week...especially if you give plenty of notice.
