I have the kids pick up the playroom while I get the plates ready. They know that I won't put the food on the table until the room is picked up so they usually pick-up and sing "pick up pick up, everybody everywhere" with no problems at all. They are good eaters and look forward to lunch.

This is exactly what we do to and it works for me... BUT, in the case of the OP, I don't think these kiddos would participate - it would just be a huge fight for her and a major delay in her lunch service. Sounds like these kids need constant supervision in order to get another done!

Yes they do. They are ALL wonderful kids, until the SECOND I leave their sight. ::

Today I tried completely changing my routine around, and we came inside right as lunch was ready (lasagna I prepped this morning/put in the oven while we were outside, tossed salad, and fruit salad I cut up this morning). I had the kids sit in the florida room, take off shoes, coat, hats, gloves, etc 1
at a time, and then wash their hands in the kitchen sink- right next to me.... (while I was doing lunch trays) one at a time. As soon as they were done, they were able to help me serve the dishes. I also went in order of best behavior/quietest first. Worked like a charm. I over-praised the heck out of those kids today. Completely stress free! YAY!

I also wanted to add--- I take ages 2-5. Currently I have a younger group (for me) 4-just turned 2 year olds and 2-3 year olds and my own ds who is 5 (missed K cutoff because of his birthdate and is pre-k 2 days a week). I also don't use high chairs or sippies and expect more from my 2 year olds than their parents/previous caregivers have as far as mealtimes go.
