Sure, there are times when we need to comfort our children, and "poor baby" is appropriate. Like when they fall and hurt themselves, or when they get scared or startled by something. Comforting is part of good parenting.

But when you are comforting a child because he is crying about being punished for misbehaving; you are essentially giving them positive attention for misbehaving. Therefore, you are positively reinforcing the misbehavior, IMHO.

We had a talk about that word and how it is unacceptable and he should never say it again. It is because of his anxiety over it that I decided to tell you via text instead of at pickup today. "

He replied that he is so frustrated that they can't watch TV or listen to Pandora without hearing that word anymore. Poor boy, he must feel so bad."

Part of me is glad that he won't be overreacting, but part of me is frustrated because of his "poor baby" attitude. That is exactly why his son is always crying and so emotional! They coddle him about everything, apparently even when he says really bad words.
Ummm, they need to be careful of what they watch and listen to around their child. Not make excuses.

That is really annoying. I'm sorry.

I dropped the bomb the other day but in my defense it was me yelling at my kid to get my other kid away from the road. Just came out of adrenline and i felt horrible right after.
