How Can I Teach A Child To Cover Their Cough?

I have an almost 3 yo DCB that just won't cover his cough. I've actually never had a child, that wasn't an infant, not do this. He's had a cough all week, sent home on Wednesday with a fever, and comes back today coughing quite a bit. No matter how many times I remind and show him, he will not cover his cough. When I try to show him how to do it with his arm, he fights me and throws a fit. (This feller is extremely independent and hard headed) I just want to limit him from hacking on the toys, kids, and food...especially now that 3 of us here seem to be coming down with the same respiratory infection

I will be watching this thread also has I have one that never ever covers when they sneeze. Everyday they sneeze in their breakfast and lunch (one reason I can't serve family style). Sneezes on the toys but I can take them away and wash, disinfect them-can't do that with food.

For that age and this time of year, with my crew at least, covering our mouth "Dracula" style has worked wonders! Of course you have to finish your cough/sneeze with a sinister Bwahaahaa! Good luck!

There is a song and dance that teaches this. They did a spin off of it on that recent back to school Kleenex commercial...

Maybe check youtube and do it during circle times for a bit?
