    Need Some Advice...Medical Problems!!!!!

I have been having a major medical issue for the past month. I was hospitalized for 6 days, and came close to losing my vision in both eyes completely. I am now on high doses of steroids and undergoing weekly chemotherapy.

Here is my issue. I only closed my daycare for two days - the rest of the time I was hospitalized I arranged for other coverage (mostly my former assistant, mother and sister-in-law). Initially, all of my families were pretty good about it. I am now starting to get the comments about lack of consistency, people in and out, etc.

I have also had parents start picking and choosing when they are coming, when they are paying, etc. I actually just had a mom tell me she was only paying for 2/3 days this week because she was making up for a day when I was in the hospital. I have contracts, and both paid sick and personal days built in to my contracts. I also have a paid personal day coming up in 2 weeks that has been scheduled for 5 months. One of the families asked me if I was going to cancel that day because of my absences. My daycare has been open - I am just not always the one running it.

I guess I am struggling with how much I should be enforcing my rules and regulations. Most of the families have been great, but at the same time, I am taking a hit financially with all of this in and out stuff. Then again, they are allowing me to come and go to my appointments and treatments without too much grief. All of my families are returning next year, so I am trying to keep the peace and keep everyone happy (not something I usually do - it is usually rules are rules around here).

Would you be pushing for payment, or just taking what you could get? I am closed for the year in 5 more weeks, but the illness will not be under control anytime soon and the treatments will continue through the summer. I guess I am just looking for ideas on how to get through this without ruffling feathers, losing too much money, and losing my excellent business reputation. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Aw, so sorry to hear you are having medical l issues....hoping you are feeling better and back up to par soon!

As far as your policies go, I would absolutely enforce them!

If any of this was an issue before, the parents should have brought it to your attention BEFORE continuing to use your care (no matter who was providing services that day).

I would make a copy of the contract they signed and fully enforce ALL payments due. The worst thing that can happen is they give notice and leave but since you are closing in 5 weeks, I wouldn't care.

In my personal opinion, I think they owe you and they know it, they are just trying to pull one over on you and figuring since you have alot on your plate right now that you will cave.

I say stand strong and get what's due! happyface

Oh my goodness. First and foremost, big hugs... I hope you are ok!

My primary concern would be my health... and changing my handbook immediately! I have 5 paid sick days. Apart from that, if I provide backup care (my husband) or am sick but still open and a parent CHOOSES not to bring their child they MUST still pay. If the daycare is open - you pay.

Again, I am sorry you are going through this and having to deal with ignorant parents on top of it. I personally would push for payment - the amount of crap we all put up with on a regular basis is enough already, nevermind having health issues to boot.

      Best of luck, dear.

I'm SO sorry you are going through this! Send out a letter and a copy of your handbook and policies to everyone, and stick up for yourself.

I cant believe the newve of how people would treat their provider in a time of sickness or need. Not even following the contract they signed? That says a lot about their character.

Unbelievable. They should be GRATEFUL that you stayed open and didn't leave them in a bind. I can't even understand why they would think they don't have to pay. Obviously you need to pay the person that was covering for you!
Enforce your policies. If they don't want to come back next year then I'd say you're better off without them.

So sorry you're going through this. I'm so thankful that you did not lose your vision! I hope and pray you continue on the road to good healing.

I also think they are trying to take advantage of you. The only time i don't get paid is if i close and my vacation and holidays. They signed the contract and they should abide by it. I would sit down and talk with them regarding this or term. You don't sound like you need the added stress while your doctoring!! Shame on them for trying to take advantage of you

Sorry you are having medical problems.

I would send out a newsletter that thanks them for all their patience during this difficult time and remind them that the contracts are still in force. Your absences have been covered and you have to pay for a replacement/substitute, therefore, the same rate is due the same day it is always due. If they chose not to come on days it was someone other than you working, that is their perrogative but it doesn't change what is owed and when.

Hope things get better for you!

Thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery.

You should send out a letter to all parents - thank them for their thoughtfulness and consideration during this stressful time. Remind them how your family has stepped in to provide continuity for the children. Then politely inform them that all contracts are still in force and as such, you need to be paid accordingly.
