Getting Cheap Gak Stuff Out 0f Hair

DCG came in this morning with dried stuff in her hair. I was told that it was cheap gak stuff that she accidentally got in her hair. It's not real Gak though (slime stuff) but a cheap immitation stuff. I think it was clear with glitter stuff in it (like the ones that you get from the little machines or the .99 cent store). It looks like glue and glitter dried up in her hair and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the clump out. It's not water soluble, they tried running warm water through it and combing it out at home and I tried it here at DC but it's not working.

I've tried ice (like gum) and now I'm going to try leaving some conditioner in there for about 10-15 minutes (like how you get extension glue out). Any other ideas? She already has missing hair from an accident from when she was a baby and I'm afraid they might have to resort to cutting the stuff out which will mean cutting a large chunk of hair out , it's right on the top of her head near her scalp. I'm willing to try (and suggest ideas for them to try at home if anything more potent than conditioner is needed) anything so please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks.

My hubby says try WD 40. He's used it on his hands so it may work. I'm hoping the conditioner does the trick for you.

Oh that's awesome. I don't know why I didn't think of that. I just tried the conditioner so in 15 minutes if I can't comb it out then I'll suggets the WD40. I have some too somewhere I think. I'll wait until she gets picked up to ask if they want to try it. Thanks.

Sometimes using ice on Gooey stuff in the hair works by hardening it.

Thanks. The conditioner didn't work even after leaving it on for 30 minutes so I tried baby oil, then the ice then even peanut butter (i remember trying this once on a cat that got caught in a sticky mouse trap) ... none of it worked or even softened it a little. I mentioned at pick-up for them to try the WD40 and they said they would and if that didn't work they'd try Goo Gone so I'll know tomorrow if it worked or not, I was too chicken to try either here at home . Thanks!

It's not gooey anymore ... it's hard and clear like dried school glue

Sounds like it's going to be the "snip". It will grow. I bet they won't get that stuff again. Yuck!

We've made the more homemade stuff in our center and it stained the carpet. Even though the kids play with it at the tables, when you've got a lot of them, somebody always ends up carting some across the room. Some of the little guys can be pretty sneaky.

Hopefully the rest of her hair is long enough that they can pull it up around the bald spot and make a pony tail. At least it's nearly summer. Once it starts growing in they can cut it all short and she'll be cool as a cucumber!

Hey - I wonder if that's what happened to this Star's daughter! Either that or she's trying to make this the new summer style for girls!
Edit: Ah.. it's a cultural thing - hadn't read the article just looked at the photo.

Padma Lakshmi's daughter has a new look! The host and judge of Bravo's "Top Chef" was out and about with her 2-year-old daughter, Krishna Lakshmi-Dell, over the weekend and the little girl was sporting a buzz cut. During their day … Continue reading →

sorry to tell you, but you have to cut it out. My dd thought it was like play doh and put it in her hair, nothing worked so we had to cut it out, but what was worse she was playing on her brothers bed and got it on the comforter, to this day, its still there, 4 yrs later. No matter how much I wash it, it just doesn't come out.

Curious to know....did they get it out? If so, what did they use?

I might need to know this later.....just in case.... ::

PEANUT BUTTER! It's a miracle. Need a good shampoo after...but it works wonders. Just rub it in. (No, I am not joking)

                  OK...never mind...just read that didn't work either...WOW!

                    mayonnaise?

But, really, I wouldn't even worry about it......let her parents deal with it

Nope ladies, it didn't come out

They tried Goo Gone but not the WD40, they didn't have any.

                          So far we've tried
                          - Warm water
                          - Conditioner
                          - Peanut Butter
                          - Baby Oil
                          - Ice
                          - Goo Gone

I'm going to try a few more suggestions today like the Mayo and white vinegar but I'm still chicken to try the WD40 . I have permission to try it but I'm reluctant.

I really don't want them to have to cut it out and neither does her uncle (she lives with him). As a baby she had hot liquid spilled on her head and she has a scar that covers most of the left side of her head. The hair at the top of her head is used to comb it over the bald spot so that it isn't so noticable and guess where the goo stuff is stuck ... yep, right at the top of her head. If they cut it out then they won't be able to use the hair to cover her bald spot and her hair there grows so SLOW (there's scar tissue on the top of her head too).

Oh well, thanks ladies. I'll try the mayo and the vinegar and see what happens. If it was really the Gak stuff or homemade stuff made from Elmer's glue then Goo Gone would've worked. This stuff was a clear slime with glitter that came in an egg with her easter basket. I'm just glad it happened at home and not here at daycare ::.

That sounds like the stuff I bought the kids for Easter from Target. The egg says ANKYO on the bottom and it's made it China.
