Questioning a Kid's Hearing?

I have a 4 year old who is generally very well behaved and responsible. I rarely have to tell him twice about anything.....Except when we are outside. It seems worse lately. When we go on a walk and I tell them to stop walking, everyone stops except him. Like I said, he usually listens to what he is told, so I find this odd. When I finally get his attention, he usually looks at me confused. Today, we were feeding geese at the pond and I told him he not to walk any further (there was a small hole near the pond with water). Well, he kept going, soaking his leg, and we had to go home.

He doesn't say, "I didn't hear you" but he looks kind of confused and embarrassed when I have to correct him. He's a pretty shy did too. Do you think the hearing is off?? It's only outside though, but there is obviously more excess noise out there vs. indoors. (cars driving by, wind, etc).

Ever had to suggest this idea to a parent??

It is possible to have a full wax in his ears and get them cleaned. If it doesn't work then he may need to get his hearing test or hearing screening.


My friend has hearing loss when she was 3 years old. Well, she has hearing loss in her genetic family between 18 months old to 5 years old. I can't remember what is called. All of her family are strong genetic hearing impaired.

I have a child that I think he has alot of ear wax because he can't understand anything I say unless I yell at him. And I have to repeat it several times. He also has earwax sometimes oozing out.

My 4 year old son's preschool teacher and my father have asked me if there was something going on with his hearing. His teacher mentioned that she wasn't overly concerned about it, but sometimes it seemed as though he didn't hear her and acted spacey. He passed his hearing test last spring, although not with flying colors, so our ped suggested we test him again after I emailed him with my concern. Sure enough...no hearing problem...just spacey!

I don't think it would come off wrong to just mention your concerns, give an example, and ask if they've noticed the same at home. The first step, at least according to our ped, is just get his ears rechecked and go from there if they are concerned.
