I also believe less is more. I'm wondering how many kids you have and what ages since you said you got talked into this baby.
IF you normally don't have babies you should have a list of required items from parents:
bottles
formula (if you're not on the food program)
paci/soothie
2 sets of clothing
1-2 blankets (you can still swaddle with a blanket just one, I like two blankets because my baby spits up a lot, but only use one at a time)
diapers
wipes
burp clothes (I use washclothes)
Big stuff:
Pack N Play or Crib with 2 matress covers so if baby spits up and takes another nap you have a clean sheet
Activity Gym (Floor mat with dangling toys, they can use this from birth up)
Swing (Gets baby off floor and moving, but don't use more than 20 minutes twice a day--this is required by OUR licensing here)
Create a SAFE ZONE/ BABY ZONE and inforce "Don't Touch" with all the other kids.
I just have by my changing table in the main room the swing, bumbo under the swing, and the activity mat. This area of the main room is a "Don't Touch It's For Baby" and when baby leaves I will sometimes put away the activity mat to give the kids to extra 3 x 3 foot space. I only have one part time baby about 25 hours a week.
I also have a bumbo and infant-to-toddler rocker and a bouncy seat but my 3 month old hates those so I am selling one and putting the others in storage. The bumbo seat I would not get now because you'll have to store it for 3 months until baby can hold it's head up and you don't even know for sure if you want this baby. I also have 2 boppy pillows, but have not used them. They are cuter just for the big kids to use but remember these are U shaped pillows that have covers and if someone spits up on it then it needs to be washed. You also have to be right by baby while using the boppy pillow so it's not something I can use to walk away and change diapers.
In the kitchen I have a high chair, but that is for my 1 year old and I have an exersaucer which my 3 month old uses with a blanket pushed around her to keep her in a stationary position. She likes this, but she is 3 months and is only in it if she wakes up while we're eating lunch.
Good Luck and don't buy much until you get baby. Your open arms will be the most used and then the sleeping area is the next most used area for such a young baby.
