IMPORTANT California Food Program Participants Please Read

    just got this email

    Friends,
A few days ago we were made aware of the fact that the Governor's proposed 2012-13 budget contains the elimination of state meal reimbursement to non-Prop 98 agencies (most non-school centers and agencies). "State meal money" is the additional CA state reimbursement added to federal reimbursement for breakfasts and lunches served to low-income children here in California. The current amount for State Fiscal Year 2011-12 is 15.62 cents. Centers receive the additional reimbursement for meals served to free and reduced-price eligible children. (Sponsors of homes receive the additional reimbursement for 75% of all breakfasts and lunches served and may retain up to 30% for their administrative costs.)

The proposed cuts would be devastating for many organizations and child care sites struggling to remain financially viable after last year's cuts to child care.

We need your immediate support and participation!

Right now we need to determine the impact of such a proposal on our centers and family day care sponsors throughout the state. Sometime in February we will need to draft a letter to the State Senate and Assembly Budget Committee Chairs laying out the impact of such a proposal if it were to be adopted. We will then set up a meeting with the committee staffs. We may also very well need each of you to write to your State Senator or Assembly member, especially if they are on their respective Budget Committees. We have identified those members and can work with those of you in key districts when the time comes.

You do not need to be a member to join with us in trying to overturn this proposed cut! We will be posting updates to our website shortly (under the Advocacy tab).

Please respond as soon as possible to the following questions:
    1. Are you a center (or home) sponsor?
    2. If state meal money is eliminated how will this impact your agency or center?
    3. Will you have to terminate your CACFP participation?
    4. Can your agency remain financially viable without state meal money?
    5. Will you have to layoff anyone or cut salaries?
    6. Any other comments/impacts?
    Sorry for the cross posting.
