A stuffy or congested nose occurs when the tissues lining the nose become swollen. The swelling is due to inflamed blood vessels.

Many people think that a green or yellow nasal discharge means a bacterial infection, which requires antibiotics. This is NOT true. Colds will often begin with a clear nasal discharge, but after several days it usually turns creamy yellow or green. Colds are caused by viruses, and antibiotics will not help. A green or yellow nasal discharge is not a sign that you need antibiotics.
I don't think it means that they need antibiotics. I think it means they are sick and need to stay away from the other kids.

If the child has thick green snot because of a viral infection they need to stay home and get well. Bacterial or viral... sick is sick.

Same here. I don't care if it is viral or bacterial. Contagious is contagious.

Not feeling well enough to participate is also good enough reason to keep them home, IMHO. They really don't have to be contagious for that to apply.

Obviously, I keep kids with chronic/long-term medical conditions so I keep "sick" kids (It is very easy for me to isolate kids, here) but I do strongly enforce the "no contagious illness" portion.

Oh, I agree! I don't let the really young kids stay either if they have excessive green snot due to it being a sanitary thing.

I also agree that sick is sick whether it is bacterial or viral.

I was just trying to correct mis-information about what green snot means. Sometimes, it is just part of a cold and doesn't always require meds to cure it.

Time at home resting with proper care is what cures it....LOL!

My doctor says that sinusitis can produce green mucus but is not contagious. I have a child who had several bouts of that, and her doctor promised she wasn't contagious. I asked my own doctor, who agreed.

Unfortunately, by the time you figure out whether it's a cold or sinusitis, if it turns out to be a cold, it's too late.
