I have a 2.5 year old DCK that is constantly putting things up her nose...she does it here and at home. I stop it when I see it, but everytime I turn my attention to another child or situation, she pops something up there. This is happening several times a week, and every other week it seems she is visiting the ER because the object is lodged beyond reach. This is occuring in her mothers care, and also in my care. She is a very sweet and well behaved child, but I just don't get why she keeps doing this? Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there a such thing as a nasal asphyixiation? Would you view this child as a liability and term them?
DC with habit of putting things up their nose?

.....trying hard not to laugh.....:
: What kinds of things does she have access to that she can put in her nose? Maybe limit the toys she plays with and only allow her chunky, big, blocky toys (i.e. things that don't fit in noses...) :

Hair ties, barrettes, pulls things off of toys, paper, crayon bits, craft supplies, food...you name it...if she finds it, she shoves it up there - Flag

She needs TIME where she functions without doing that to see she can be excited, happy, settled, etc. when she just goes about normal life.- Flag

Mom
My child is 5. She put a kidney bean up her nose at daycare. Sometimes objects like this are available for gluing onto construction paper, crafts, etc. Well, it expanded & to make a long story short, she had to have it surgically removed under anesthesia. Meanwhile my insurance doesn't want to pay b/c they feel it was a liability on the daycare's part. The daycare only has "supplemental insurance" to my insurance. If neither pays, guess who will get the bill in full with NO negotiated discounts my insurance would have in place? Me of course. The cost in full of the ER visit, ER doctor, Otolaryngologist I was referred to, and the surgery + anesthesiologist plus all other costs that are itemized & billed to you.- Flag

Yes it can go into her airway....it is dangerous. I'm sure nan can provide more info on the dangers of this. Keep any and all small objects out of reach.- Flag

I have an almost 2 year old starting to do this in my daycare right now. I never realized it could get so extreme. Man, I'm really going to have to put an end to this now and before it gets worse.
Sounds like this little one may need to start being blocked off into a safe little area that you can keep childproofed for her, the same as you would for a much younger child that sticks everything in their mouth. Good luck!- Flag

My 2 year old stuck a Lego in his nose while I was out. I
Come in from running errands to see my
Hubby messing with his nose and he tells me he's trying to get it out. All I could think to do was to blow a big breath in his mouth and it worked, the Lego flew out of his nose! Thank goodness!- Flag

I had a little guy put peas up his nose a couple of weeks ago. Mom held pepper under his nose until he sneezed! No more peas for him!
Good luck!- Flag
